The statistics seem staggering: According to the American Diabetes Association, 16 million people in the United States have diabetes, and about one-third of them aren't even aware that they have the disease. This year alone, about 798,000 people will be diagnosed with diabetes and more than 187,000 will die from the disease and its complications.

Many of the health problems associated with diabetes could be prevented or controlled if people with this illness were educated on how to manage their disease--and if the public was more aware about how to reduce the risk of and detect diabetes. Diabetes and its associated health problems not only affect thousands of individuals, but also costs the nation $98 billion annually.
