Adult Psychology Externship Program

The Adult Externship Program at Beth Israel Medical Center offers year-long positions starting in September of each year. All externs will receive two placements, 8 hours each, one on an inpatient unit and the other on an outpatient service. Each externship involves a total commitment of 16 hours per week.

INPATIENT PLACEMENTS
All externs will be placed on an inpatient rotation. Externs’ activities on inpatient services will include provision of group therapy & psychological testing, attendance at interdisciplinary team meetings, case conferences, walk rounds, and weekly group supervision. Beth Israel has three different psychiatric inpatient services, a General Adult unit, a Dual Diagnosis unit, and a split Geriatric/General Adult unit.

OUTPATIENT PLACEMENTS
All externs will be placed on one of several outpatient services. Currently available outpatient services are listed below. Externs’ activities will vary upon each service and may include group and/or individual psychotherapy as well as intake evaluations.

  • Psychiatric Outpatient Services for Adults (POSA). The Psychiatric Outpatient Services for Adults clinic provides psychotherapy and psychopharmacological treatment to adult patients with a wide variety of psychiatric diagnoses. Externs in the clinic provide weekly individual outpatient psychotherapy.

  • Neurobehavior Division. The Division of Neurobehavior and Alzheimer's Disease provides assessment and treatment for patients suffering from a range of neurological conditions. Externs would receive extensive training in administering and interpreting a variety of neuropsychological assessment tools.

  • Peter Krueger Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic. The Peter Krueger Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic provides outpatient psychotherapy and psychopharmacological treatment for adults and children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Externs would have the opportunity to provide some or all of the following: intake evaluations, individual and family psychotherapy, and group therapy.
