H1N1 (Swine Flu) Information

Hospital Visitor Restriction During 2009 – 2010 Influenza Season

H1N1 (or swine flu) is a new strain of the influenza virus. H1N1 is caused by a virus similar to regular (seasonal) flu; however, the current flu vaccine is not effective in preventing the spread of H1N1.

For the latest information on the virus, we encourage you to visit the Websites for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

The CDC has published a brochure with information for people who may face special medical challenges during flu season.

Symptoms
Symptoms of the H1N1 virus are similar to those of the seasonal flu. If you experience any of the symptoms below you should stay home and speak with your physician. Symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Body aches
  • Headaches
  • Chill
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea
  • Severe or persistant vomiting

How Can I Protect Myself?
The first line of defense is to get the vaccine to protect yourself against the H1N1 virus. Also it is important for everyone to maximize ordinary, everyday precautions.

  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you get sick, limit contact with others to avoid infecting them.
