Law Pays for Counseling Of Crime Victim Families

Albany - The spouse and children of anyone who has been physically injured as a result of a crime would be compensated by the state for counseling costs under legislation signed yesterday by Gov. George E. Pataki. Among other things, the law provides that the victim of a sex offense is presumed to have suffered physical injury. This would allow immediate family members in sex crime cases, as well as the victims, to have counseling costs covered by the state.

"The injury inflicted on one member of a family affects the entire family, as they are forced to deal with a variety of difficult emotions and the added stress of shifting responsibilities and changes in the structure of the family," Mr. Pataki said in a statement.
